Out I Went and Work That Core.

This morning I truly was not feeling like getting up early to run. I’m telling you it felt so nice and warm under those covers. But I really wanted to get a run in…even if it was short – to sort some things out in my head. So out I went. It was all worth it in the end when I was able to see this gorgeous sunrise.

I somehow convinced myself to go a few steps further and get in a 5 mile run.

After the run I did a quick core workout in my living room before hot tailing it to work. Some scissor kicks, planks and full extensions which felt so good and much needed.

These are some of my favorite workouts to work that core. I think it’s vital for runners to have a strong core to improve fitness and prevent injury. Yoga helps with this, as well as pilates and of course strength training. Planks always top the list for me because they are so easy to do…anywhere and everywhere.

Here are some others.

Russian Twists

Scissor Kicks

Full Extensions

Kickdowns

Bicycles

Mountain Climbers

I also found this great workout from Pumps and Iron…12 minutes so perfect to do pre or post run. Check it out here.

Did anyone else get a sunrise run in this morning? What are your favorite exercises to work your core?

  1. Great job!! That’s fantastic you got 5 miles in before work + core work!! I LOVE ab rollers, hanging abs, and leg lifts!! They are some of my favorite core exercises!

  2. I am so jealous of your first thing in the morning workouts. I can’t wait for Spring to fully arrive (it’s still too nippy out) so that I could *hopefully* run w/ the two kids. It’s supposed to hit a whopping sunny 70s on Sunday. I’m so looking forward to that weather. 🙂 Maybe bright and early before Sunday mass. We’ll see. HAHA

    1. 70s sound great for the weekend! Funny I actually saw a girl on my route this morning that looked like you! I thought…that couldn’t be Rachel…or could it? 🙂 lol

  3. I love all of those exercises. Plus, at the gym, I really like the Roman Chair, especially to get up off the cranky tailbone, which doesn’t always agree with doing ab work on the mat. Glad you got out for a sunrise run. Such a great way to start the day!

  4. I need to work on adding more core work after my rides and my runs. I didn’t catch the sunrise, but I caught a beautiful rainbow the other day. Check it out 😀

  5. I much prefer running before work, although I’m up way before the sun starts rising! Ran 3 this morning (was supposed to be 5 but my legs weren’t up for it). Great job getting 5 in before work!

My favorite core workout is pilates, for sure!

  6. I totally do that too…go on a run to sort things out in my head. It’s like my brain in incapable of doing it any other way lol I hope your run helped. Have a great Night!

  7. I am so envious of people who can get up and run before work. I think I have done that like once or twice in my life… I just love the afternoon runs so much! And these are great moves – especially right after a run when you’re already feeling so good! What a pretty sunrise to get to see! 🙂 Awesome job!
